Get to know writer Maureen J. Grenier:

1. What is your story about?

A young woman is kidnapped by members of a drug cartel but manages to escape by joining forces with another prisoner, an undercover cop. They don’t appear to know anything about each other but work together as though they are old friends, maybe even romantically involved. She slips away during the escape and a lot of drug money slips away, too. When she reappears, she has a good explanation for her disappearance, but doesn’t have the money and no one can find a link between her and the cop, or between her and the cartel. The police and the FBI believe nothing, and watch and listen to everything.
.

2. Why should people know this story?

I always write to entertain my audience first and, secondly, to make a comment about some aspect of life, in this case, the drug trade. I hope people understand the story’s message, and enjoy the humour, romance, adventure, and mystery.

3. This story has a lot going for it. How would you describe this story in two words?

Suspect everyone.

4. What movie have you seen the most in your life?

Casablanca

5. How long have you been working on this story?

I spent six months thinking about it and working out the dialogue in my mind, a month writing it, and six months editing it.

6. How many stories have you written?

I have completed and edited five stories, three of which have been published—two sports-mysteries for children, Something’s Missing and Someone’s Trapped, plus a short story published in Chatelaine magazine.

7. What motivated you to write this story?

People, in general, seemed to have learned very little from Prohibition and are still trying to use force against the “bad guys” who are involved in the drug trade as sellers and buyers. The problem is that the bad guys are often also good guys, or camouflaged as good guys, and they are everywhere. A different solution to combating drugs should be used. I wanted to build an adventure-mystery-romance to promote interest in a subject that gets a lot of coverage but results in few effective solutions.

8. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

I love my family, music, reading, art, and travel.

9. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Hang in there.
